Created by Ghanaian artist Kwaku Ntow, Ancestors' Prayer explores ancestry as something living: protection, memory, lineage, and the presence of those whose lives made our own possible.

The artwork was originally created for Chuck King's debut book, Generational Curses: Trauma Letters from Our Time to Yours, connecting the piece to a larger conversation about what families inherit across generations.

But inheritance is not only trauma.

We inherit names. Faces. Traditions. Strength. Knowledge. Features. Stories. Ways of surviving. Pieces of people we may have never met continue to appear in who we become.

Surrounded by ancestral symbols, the figures in Ancestors' Prayer represent generations existing within the same lineage. The composition asks us to see ancestry not simply as people who died before us, but as roots that continue feeding the living.

There is protection here, but there is also reclamation.

Reclaiming the names that were forgotten. Reclaiming histories that were interrupted. Reclaiming connections separated by migration, slavery, colonialism, family trauma, and time. Reclaiming the understanding that none of us began with ourselves.

Ancestors' Prayer is ultimately about looking backward without remaining there. It honors those who came before while reminding us that one day, we too will become somebody's ancestor.

What we heal, preserve, teach, and leave behind becomes part of their inheritance.
