Created by Ghanaian artist Kwaku Ntow, Blangel is a visual tribute to Black motherhood, protection, and the almost sacred place mothers have held across generations of Black life.

The title combines Black and Angel, but the meaning of the painting is not confined to any one religion. The wings and halo become symbols of something larger: protection, sacrifice, guidance, presence, and the instinct to shelter those placed in your care.

For generations, Black mothers have carried families through circumstances that demanded extraordinary strength. They have protected children physically, emotionally, culturally, and spiritually, often while carrying burdens of their own. Blangel places that protection at the center of the image and asks us to recognize its sacredness.

Her open hands do not represent weakness. They represent availability. Comfort. Guidance. The place you can return to when the rest of the world becomes too heavy.

Whether understood through Christianity, African spirituality, ancestral tradition, another faith, or no religion at all, the message remains: there is something powerful about the protection of a Black mother.

Blangel honors the women who became somebody's first shelter, first teacher, first protector, and first understanding of unconditional love.
