Painted by Laura Wheeler Waring in 1930, Portrait of a Boy captures a young Black boy with a quiet confidence and individuality. Rather than turning childhood into caricature or spectacle, Waring allows her subject simply to exist with dignity, seriousness, and presence. Waring was one of the leading Black portrait artists associated with the Harlem Renaissance. Throughout her career, she painted Black subjects with careful attention to personality, complexion, expression, and character, helping expand how Black people were represented within American fine art. Portrait of a Boy is especially powerful in its simplicity. It preserves Black childhood as something worthy of portraiture, remembrance, and a place on the gallery wall. Presented as a high quality reproduction on thick matte paper and finished in a .75 inch matte black wood frame with a protective Acrylite front. Lightweight and ready to hang with hardware included. The Bloodline Art Gallery Preserving Black art. Bringing our history home.
