Painted by Charleston-born artist Edwin Augustus Harleston, The Honey Man captures a Black working man of the Lowcountry with presence, dignity, and humanity. Rather than treating everyday Black labor as background, Harleston placed it at the center of the canvas, preserving a glimpse of Black Charleston life during the early twentieth century. Harleston was an artist, educator, photographer, and civil rights leader whose work documented the people and culture around him. Born in Charleston in 1882, he became one of South Carolina's important early Black artists and the first president of the Charleston branch of the NAACP. The Honey Man is more than a portrait. It is a record of Black work, Black community, and the people whose everyday lives helped shape the Lowcountry. Presented as a high quality reproduction on thick matte paper and finished in a .75 inch matte black wood frame with a protective Acrylite front. Lightweight and ready to hang with hardware included. The Bloodline Art Gallery Preserving Black art. Bringing our history home.
