Created by Ghanaian artist Kwaku Ntow and inspired by Chuck King's reflections on Black elders, The Porch captures something that once sat at the center of Black community life: the elders who watched, remembered, taught, corrected, prayed, and endured.

An older Black man and woman sit together on the porch, carrying the quiet familiarity of people who have lived enough life to understand one another without needing to explain everything. Their age is not hidden. It is part of the beauty of the piece.

The Porch draws from the relationship between Black elders, the church, and community across generations. For many of our grandparents and great grandparents, the church was more than a place visited on Sunday. It was fellowship, organizing, survival, family, mourning, celebration, and one of the institutions that helped hold Black communities together.

But the painting also asks us to look at that relationship today.

Generations change. Communities change. Our relationship with the church has changed. Yet the elders remain living bridges between what Black life was, what it survived, and what we are becoming.

The Porch is a portrait of resilience, companionship, faith, memory, and growing old together. It honors the people who carried traditions long enough for another generation to decide what it will carry forward.
