Painted by Henry Ossawa Tanner around 1891, Woman from the French West Indies presents a Black woman with a quiet dignity and presence that stood apart from many of the stereotypical representations of Black people common in nineteenth-century American art. Tanner was one of the first internationally celebrated Black American painters. After leaving the United States for France in 1891, he developed a career that placed a Black artist within the international fine art world at a time when racial barriers severely restricted Black artists at home. This early portrait belongs to an important period in Tanner's career and reflects his commitment to portraying Black subjects with humanity, individuality, and seriousness. Presented as a high quality reproduction on thick matte paper and finished in a .75 inch matte black wood frame with a protective Acrylite front. Lightweight and ready to hang with hardware included. The Bloodline Art Gallery Preserving Black art. Bringing our history home.
